Sera-Myu
The musicals were a series of live theater productions that began back in the summer of 1993. There were 29 musicals in all and had more than 800 performances since their opening show. Many of the shows were plots of the anime and manga expanded to create a bigger story (like that manga image of the inner senshi in romantic poses with Prince Endymions warriors) and ran about three times a year (matching with the holidays of Japanese schools).
There were also revised versions of certain musicals called kaiteiban. These versions were forms of the summer musicals revised to go along with the winter season. These winter versions would often bring back the villain from the summer or given actresses bigger parts in the musical who are leaving the show.
The sets and backdrops werent outrageous, they were simple. Just as attacks were, they were just colored lights hitting their targets. But as I always believe, simple is usually better, gives it more character. Transformations were done off stage with their transformation phrases being heard. Usagi was the only one who actually transformed on stage which was done by having a body double and a black out on stage so the actress can switch with the double.
The musicals have a few things in common, such as the theme song which was usually played in a battle when the enemies were defeated; as well as a few other character songs that played during romantic scenes or when a specific enemy appeared (there were multiple other songs played for scenes too).
Songs from the musicals were compiled into about 20 music albums and many of the actual shows were released on DVD.
